In the Store2Hydro project, the team at TU Wien focused on identifying and mapping the potential for expanding hydropower-based electricity storage across Europe by assessing existing hydropower plants that could potentially be converted into pumped storage facilities. The mapping presented here provides an overview of installed hydropower plants that may be suitable for retrofitting with reversible pump turbines.
By distinguishing between power plants requiring small, medium, or large adjustments, the overall assessment provides a structured overview of technically promising storage potential. The map shown on the website focuses specifically on sites requiring only small adjustments. It therefore offers the opportunity to explore potential hydropower sites and to assess the availability of solar and wind resources within distances of 50, 100, and 200 km. This helps to identify regions with high wind and solar energy production where additional storage capacity may be especially relevant to support the integration of renewable energy and strengthen grid flexibility.
You can find more information about the mapping in the report here.
We provide below the interactive map with which you can investigate the sites that have been evaluated.
